Our HISD School Sustain Story

Sustainability Starter

This all started in 2025 when I, Prithvi Raol, was in 6th grade at Pershing middle school in Houston. I had a Gifted and talented project for Houston Independent School District on a world issue. While I was thinking about what to do for the project I thought about clothes and textiles, and how they impacted the environment. So I found out that the production of clothes contributed 10% of the carbon dioxide on the earth. It also releases millions of carbon fibers in to water and the food cycle during washing and production. The textile industry uses around 93 billion cubic meters of water annually, which is roughly 4% of the world's freshwater extraction. A single cotton t-shirt requiring approximately 2,700 liters of water to manufacture. That is the same as 70 showers and roughly 1,687 flushes. Normal clothes that we use every day and have multiple wears of take up a crazy amount of water to produce. And farming some of the resources for clothes also uses much water. So I thought that there had to be ways to get past this block on the road to environmental sustainability. And then when I told my dad, he said what about passing clothes down or swaping them. Maybe even ,making the fashion industry use more sustainable products for clothes. So I sighed and muttered about having to do more work, and did some more work.
